Water scarcity has affected many areas of Greece, particularly the islands, as climate change and mass tourism further reduce water sources.

Now, water scarcity is also impacting Attica, prompting the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP) to activate additional sources to support the water supply network.

EYDAP CEO Charis Sahinis told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA) that these “sources” include the springs and wells in Mavrosouvala, north of Parnitha, and those in the broader region of Attica-Boeotia. Water is also being drawn from the Yliki reserves.

As of August 20, the EYDAP reservoirs held about 705 million cubic meters (m³) of water, the lowest level for that date since 2008.

He emphasized that EYDAP is closely monitoring the water scarcity issue but does not need to impose consumption restrictions yet. A campaign with recommendations for the public has been underway, and they are waiting for voluntary compliance.

The situation will change if there is no rainfall and snowfall during the winter. If that’s the case, we will enter the red zone; we are still in the yellow, not even orange.

According to Charis Sahinis, the lack of rainfall over the past two years has significantly reduced water reserves.

He stressed the need for people to be careful and avoid wasting water and clarified that there are no plans to raise water rates.
