Extreme heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 40°C, have struck Southern Europe in recent days, particularly affecting Italy, Spain, Greece, and Portugal [1], [2].

Authorities in these countries issued warnings about the risk of wildfires, while scientists warned that extreme heatwaves will become increasingly frequent due to climate change. The French meteorological service reported that up to 10 additional heatwave days per year are expected by 2100.

Half of Greece, two-thirds of Portugal, and 21 out of 27 major Italian cities were on high alert yesterday. In southwestern Spain, temperatures reached 46°C, a June record that broke the previous 45°C recorded in Seville 60 years ago.

Heat-related deaths could increase by 370% worldwide by 2050, while in Europe alone, 61,000 people died during the heatwaves of 2022.

Experts warned that intense heat can affect daily life, especially vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children. Authorities across all countries recommended avoiding physical activity during the hottest hours of the day.

In Athens, the first major wildfire of the summer broke out in Palaia Fokaia, while temperatures surpassed 40 degrees in many parts of the country. The highest temperature recorded was in Skala, Messinia, reaching 43.7 degrees.
