A problem in an underwater pipeline ending in the northwestern part of Patmos, at Hohlakas beach, is causing malfunctions in the sewage treatment plant, resulting in poor-quality -and in some cases brown– water coming from the taps of residents and businesses.
Residents of the island lodged complaints about these problems, which led to an investigation that confirmed the sewage treatment plant was underperforming.
The company responsible for operating the plant has undertaken its repair following the relevant inspection. Due to the risk of sewage leaking into the sea, crews from EYDAP and the Region are on the island to carry out inspections and restore the problem.
The deputy mayor of Patmos stated that there is no health risk for residents, but noted that the facilities are old and lack proper maintenance.
The Dodecanese Prosecutor’s Office has ordered a preliminary investigation into the matter, which began today (25.08).
The Municipal Authority maintains that the problem lies in a blockage of the final pipeline that carries the wastewater. “It is an issue of biomass, of membranes, it is a matter of the final pipeline that carries the wastewater being blocked since the beginning of August. It has absolutely no connection with the water supply,” it said.
Meanwhile, a modernization plan for the pipelines and facilities is underway in cooperation with EYDAP, and the necessary funds for their replacement have already been secured, according to the Municipal Authority, which adds that the problem will be resolved permanently.
