Starting Monday, 204 Hellenic Post (ELTA) branches will close as part of the company’s restructuring plan: 32 in Attica and 172 across the rest of the country.
According to management, physical branches generate only about 10% of total revenue despite their high operating costs, while some were recording annual losses exceeding €150,000. The closures are described as “necessary,” as letter mail “has shrunk by 90%,” said ELTA CEO Grigoris Sklikas. It was also noted that at least one post office will remain operational on each island, and that employees from the closing branches will be reassigned, primarily to delivery operations.
Between 2020 and 2023, a total of 227 ELTA branches had already been shut down.
Mayors, particularly from remote areas, argue that post offices are the only way for elderly residents to receive pensions and benefits, while ELTA’s management responds that such transactions will now be handled through POS systems or partner outlets.
Specifically, the company plans to create a network of postal workers equipped with POS terminals and portable devices, along with mobile units and partnerships with small local shops that will serve as service points. Additionally, home appointments will be made available for elderly individuals and residents of remote areas.
