Despite the rapid rise of streaming platforms in recent years, Greek cinema theatres are showing signs of significant recovery, as in 2025 7.75 million tickets were “cut” (sold), about 120,000 more than the 7.63 million of 2024, while this year they are expected to exceed 8 million.

Factors such as high ticket prices, but mainly the onslaught of streaming, which grew massively during the pandemic years, played a pivotal role in the drop in attendance, mainly in the early 2020s.

However, Greek productions were the ones that brought people back en masse to theatres. Productions such as “Σμύρνη μου Αγαπημένη”, “Άνθρωπος του Θεού” but above all, “Φόνισσα”, paved the way for the return.

The top 5 “made in Greece” box-office successes are: “Πολίτικη Κουζία”, “Λούφα και Παραλλαγή” (2005), “Safe Sex”, “Υπάρχω” and “El Greco”.

The real “bang”, however, came with “Υπάρχω” (2024), the biographical film about the life of Stelios Kazantzidis, which surpassed 860,000 tickets and is now in 4th place among the biggest “made in Greece” box-office successes.

At the top of the list of the most commercial films released in 2025 was “Καποδίστριας”, which up to today has sold 739,060 tickets, followed by the Greek film “Τα Κάλαντα των Χριστουγέννων”, with 467,041 tickets.

A strong presence was also recorded by big international productions, such as “The Conjuring: Last Rites” with 253,804 tickets, “F1” with 232,973, “Lilo & Stitch” with 278,263, “Zootopia” with 275,000, “Avatar 3” with 215,000, “A Minecraft Movie” with 207,128, “One Battle After Another” with 186,934, and the Greek film “Σπασμένη Φλέβα” with 160,203 tickets.
