Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny were the big winners at the 68th Grammy Awards on Sunday, in an evening full of strong political commentary from artists who oppose the crackdown on migration by the Trump administration.
Bad Bunny, who is set to appear at the Super Bowl next Sunday, won the album of the year award for “Debí Tirar Más Fotos”. It was the first time an album in Spanish won the most important Grammy award.
Kendrick Lamar won a total of five awards, more than any other artist that night. Among them were record of the year for “Luther” and best rap album for “GNX”. With these wins he reached a total of 27 Grammys in his career, making him the most awarded rapper in the history of the Grammys.
When Bad Bunny accepted his award he said: “Before I thank God, I will say ICE out.”
The evening was characterized by intense political statements. Many artists, such as Billie Eilish, Carole King and Justin Bieber, wore pins that read “ICE OUT” (a slogan against the ICE immigration agency).
When Bad Bunny accepted his award he said: “Before I thank God, I will say ICE out,” and he added: “We are not savages, we are not animals, we are not aliens. We are people and we are Americans.”
Billie Eilish, accepting the song of the year award for “Wildflower”, said: “No one is illegal on stolen land,” and added that “we must continue to fight, to speak and to protest.”
