Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, announced a “framework for a future agreement” regarding Greenland, which he negotiated with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and withdrew the threat of imposing tariffs on European countries.
“Based on a very productive meeting I had with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, we have developed the framework of a future agreement regarding Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region. This solution, if implemented, will be excellent for the United States of America and all NATO member states,” Trump’s statement said.
The announcement was met with deep skepticism by the island’s residents, even as financial markets rebounded and European leaders welcomed the suspension of further tariffs.
A few hours before his post, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump reiterated that he wants to acquire Greenland without violence.
Several lawmakers, including Danish MP Sascha Faxe, expressed outrage over Greenland being excluded from Wednesday’s negotiations. “This is not a real negotiation, but a discussion between two men,” she told Sky News. “There can be no agreement without Greenland’s participation in the talks.”
No details of the agreement have been released yet, and Rutte says there is still work to be done.
According to media reports, regarding the issue of sovereignty over the island, the agreement could designate U.S. control over small areas of Greenland where military bases are located.
