Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” broke the record for Oscar nominations yesterday, receiving 16 nods for the 98th edition of the awards, which will be presented on March 15. Until yesterday, the record for most nominations was 14, shared by three films: “All About Eve” (1950), “Titanic” (1997), and “La La Land” (2016).
Coogler’s thriller, which has performed well with both critics and audiences ($368 million at the global box office), is nominated, among others, for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, as well as for the Academy’s Casting Award, which will be presented for the first time this year.
Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Bugonia” received four nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay and a nod for Emma Stone’s performance, among others.
Following closely is P. T. Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” with 13 nominations. The director is considered a favorite for Best Picture and Best Director, while Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro are also nominated.
In third place in terms of nominations are three films: “Frankenstein” by Guillermo del Toro, “Marty Supreme” by Josh Safdie, and “Sentimental Value” by Joachim Trier, each with nine nominations.
