The Chania Hospital announced the creation of a Family Planning Clinic for voluntary pregnancy terminations (abortions), after the revelation by News 247 that 46 public hospitals (outside Attica), among them this one as well, refuse abortion to women.
The request for the operation of the Clinic has already been submitted by the Obstetrics Clinic and the approval of the Hospital’s Scientific Committee is expected, according to information from Haniotika Nea.
Only 12/46 officially admitted to the ministry that they do not perform voluntary pregnancy terminations, in violation of the law, while the director of Chania General Hospital, Marianthi Kalloniatou, had informed the ministry in writing on 17.02 that it proceeds with abortions “only for medical reasons”.
The hospitals of Naxos, Limnos, Katerini, Veria, Edessa, Giannitsa, Kozani, Ptolemaida, Kastoria, Thiva and Karystos are the remaining 11 hospitals.
Now, she herself stated that “respecting the indisputable right of women to access public health structures for pregnancy termination, but also the right of conscience that arises for health personnel, with the operation of a Family Planning clinic with a responsible doctor, women will be able, after booking an appointment through IDIKA (Electronic Governance of Health and Social Security), to proceed with voluntary pregnancy terminations”.
Her estimation is that the Clinic will start its operation before Easter, while it will be staffed by a gynecologist of Chania Hospital who declared availability to perform voluntary pregnancy terminations.
