The Safe School Team in Cyprus recorded increased incidents of school violence for the school year 2024-2025, with dominant forms the physical and the verbal or non-verbal violence.
The quantitative data, as reports Phileleftheros, show that the incidents of school violence present differentiation per level of education and the strongest presence is located in Gymnasiums.
The incidents of physical violence were 293, of verbal or non-verbal violence 223, of electronic violence 24, of sexual violence 16 and “other”, such as thefts, 58. In total the incidents were 510.
However, only 98 schools, that is 13.19%, responded positively to be included the incidents of delinquent behaviors in the research.
Only 51.76% of the incidents were referred or reported to Services of the Ministry of Education and 23.92% to other Services.
Most incidents were noted inside the school, mainly in the yard (230) and in the classrooms (170), while fewer were recorded in corridors and other spaces. In 96% of the cases students of the same school were involved.
Only 51.76% of the incidents were referred or reported to Services of the Ministry of Education and 23.92% to other Services. The main causes are related to family difficulties, social isolation and problems of adaptation to the school environment, a fact that highlights the need for prevention.
More specifically, 28 incidents were reported to the Police, 36 to a relevant Service of the Ministry of Education, 45 to the Child Mental Health Service, 45 to the Social Welfare Services, 104 to the Immediate Intervention Team, 124 to the Educational Psychology Service, 141 incidents were registered as “other” and in 227 there was no report or referral.
