J. D. Vance appeared together with the far-right Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban in his pre-election rally in Budapest shortly before the Hungarian elections (12.04).

A telephone intervention was also made by Donald Trump, saying among other things that the Prime Minister of Hungary did an “amazing job” because he did not allow his country “to be flooded by migrants”.

He also said, “I love Hungary and I love Viktor. I tell you that he is a fantastic man. (…) I am a big admirer of him. I am with him until the end”.

The polls show first the center-right “Tisza” of Peter Magyar up to 20% ahead of the Fidesz of Viktor Orban, threatening the dominance of the Hungarian Prime Minister 16 years later.

Apart from the Trump government, Orban is also supported by the Kremlin and the Serbian Aleksandar Vucic.

Thus, the interventions of the Trump government constituted a last effort for one of the pioneers of European nationalism to recover, just 4 days before the most important elections in Hungary of the last 30 years.

Apart from the Trump government, Orban is also supported by the Kremlin and the Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic.

Both the Trump government and Moscow see Orban as a key pillar of their common opposition towards Europe, while the European Union, which is hindered by the stance of Hungary on issues concerning the war in Ukraine, hopes for his defeat.
