The Prime Minister of Latvia, Evika Siliņa, submitted her resignation following a political crisis triggered by the entry of three Ukrainian drones into Latvian airspace on May 7.

According to Latvian and Ukrainian authorities, the drones were likely targeting areas inside Russia, but lost their navigation signals — possibly due to Russian electronic jamming — and accidentally entered Latvia. One drone crashed on the ground, a second struck a fuel storage facility near Rēzekne, and a third briefly crossed Latvian airspace. No casualties or major damage were reported.

This was the second incident involving Ukrainian drones entering Latvia, following a similar event on March 25. Neither incident resulted in casualties or serious damage.

However, the latest incident sparked strong public criticism over the delayed and inadequate response by the authorities, as residents complained that the emergency alert system was activated with significant delay. Siliņa dismissed Defence Minister Andris Sprūds, citing broader weaknesses in the country’s defense sector.

The decision prompted Sprūds’ party to withdraw from the governing coalition, leading to the collapse of the government just five months before the parliamentary elections scheduled for October.
