The new, increased fine for passengers using public transport without a ticket is expected to come into force on 30 May.
A fixed fine of €100 will now apply, while passengers eligible for reduced fares will face a €50 fine. Previously, the fine was calculated as a multiple of the ticket price, amounting to approximately €72.
The increase comes under Law 5290/2026, which stipulates that the new fines take effect two months after the law’s publication in the Government Gazette on 30 March.
This change represents an increase of around €28 compared to the previous system. At the same time, the fine may be reduced by 50% if the passenger purchases an unlimited travel card valid for at least 30 days.
The fine can therefore be cut in half if the passenger buys an unlimited travel pass with a minimum duration of 30 days.
Meanwhile, ticket inspections surpassed 3.48 million within four months, nearly doubling compared to the corresponding period in 2025. In March 2026 alone, inspections approached 1 million, marking one of the highest levels recorded in recent years.
At the same time, ticket and travel card validations on buses increased by 25%, rising from 27.8 million during the first four months of 2025 to 34.7 million in 2026. In the metro system, validations reached 78.9 million, up by 9.1%.
