Police raided the headquarters of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Party in Madrid yesterday as part of an investigation into the alleged misuse of party funds.

This is another blow for Sánchez, as corruption scandals involving his party continue to multiply, with one case concerning former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and others involving members of Sánchez’s family, including his brother and wife.

Much of the attention is naturally focused on the Zapatero case. The former Spanish prime minister is accused of leading a criminal network and using his influence to secure a €53 million state bailout during the pandemic for an airline company.

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero served as Spain’s prime minister from 2004 to 2011 and is accused, among other things, of involvement in a criminal organization and influence peddling.

Investigators claim that Zapatero received a total of €2.6 million from the network, which allegedly had connections to Venezuela and China. A company owned by the former prime minister’s two daughters is also alleged to have received a significant share of the funds.

Since 2024, authorities have also been intensively investigating the business and professional activities of Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, naming her as a suspect in several offenses. At the same time, Sánchez’s brother, musician David Sánchez, is accused of influence peddling related to his appointment to a local music director position in 2017.

As a result, Pedro Sánchez’s unpopularity is growing, while the opposition continues to demand his resignation.
