Israel carried out airstrikes on Iran today, targeting several locations, including Tehran, while earlier Iran had launched missiles at northern Israel.
Iran attacked Israel after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had struck Beirut, Lebanon, in the first major attack since the ceasefire agreement between the two governments.
The Israeli military announced that it is preparing for at least several days of “combat” with Iran or for a prolonged “campaign,” according to a military statement reported by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
The Houthis launched missiles at Israel for the first time since early April and banned Israeli shipping in the Red Sea.
Donald Trump has been pressing Israel to halt its attacks on Lebanon in order to create space for an agreement that could end the broader conflict with Iran. Last week, he reportedly went as far as reprimanding Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone conversation over the issue.
Trump says he also urged Netanyahu not to attack Iran. However, Iranian officials dispute the notion that Israel acted without the approval and support of the United States.
“Nobody believes that the Zionist regime would undertake any action without prior coordination and cooperation with the United States,” said Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry. “It is entirely natural that the diplomatic process launched to bring this imposed war to an end will be affected,” he added.
