Evidence implicating at least three ministries (Justice, Finance, and Education) in a new case involving alleged irregularities surrounding Recovery Fund resources, which is already under investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, has been brought to light by in.gr.

The case concerns the implementation of AI in forensic services, which was assigned in 2023 by the Justice Ministry to a laboratory at the University of Piraeus, where a relative of a close associate of Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis works and which, according to the report, receives a large share of the funding.

The latest revelations follow an earlier in.gr report that raised questions about the selection process for the laboratory and whether there was a conflict of interest. According to the report, the project now appears to be largely inactive, while shortcomings in the artificial intelligence application have also been identified.

The report presents one photograph, three documents, and ten pieces of evidence that challenge the findings of an audit conducted by a Finance Ministry department into the case.

The report also presents one photograph, three new documents, and ten additional pieces of evidence which, according to in.gr, point to behind-the-scenes coordination and challenge the conclusions of an administrative audit previously carried out into the case. Parliamentary questions have already been submitted regarding the matter, while the investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is ongoing.

The project had also raised concerns within the scientific community. According to an earlier statement by the Biomedical Technology Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens, it was not consulted despite its long-standing experience in medical artificial intelligence applications and its ongoing cooperation with the Health Ministry on similar projects.
