A peaceful protest was held yesterday afternoon outside the Presidential Palace in Nicosia against the convening of the “Peace Council” for Gaza at a Cypriot resort, taking place yesterday and today.
The mobilization followed a call by organizations, parties, and collectives, which argue that the initiative bypasses the UN, excludes Palestinians, and provides political legitimacy to plans that, as they stated, run counter to international law. Speaking on behalf of the Social Alliance, Melani Steliou said that the Council “is not a sincere international initiative” and called on the Government to withdraw its support.
The “Peace Council” is an initiative by D. Trump for an international committee that will oversee post-war governance, reconstruction, and security in Gaza.
On behalf of the Government, Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the Republic of Cyprus is neither the organizer nor a co-organizer of the meeting. He said that the Council was established to implement a plan for the reconstruction of Gaza based on UN Resolution 2803.
He described the choice of Cyprus for convening the “Council” as “positive” and pointed out that the Republic of Cyprus has repeatedly stated that, despite developments in the region, attention must remain focused on the reconstruction plan for Gaza. He added that the Republic of Cyprus can actively participate in this plan through the President of the Republic’s eight-point proposal.
