The mother of Afroditi Nestora, Vagia Nestora, has died after being seriously injured in a gas-canister attack at the apartment building where they lived in Thessaloniki early on Monday morning.
Vagia Nestora had been hospitalized in the ICU at Hippocrates Hospital in Thessaloniki, with burns covering 80% of her body.
“In these difficult hours for me and my family, I thank you for your thoughts and support. The inhuman, blind terrorist attack on my home has put my family in an extremely difficult position; for me now, the only priority is my parents’ health,” the New Democracy politician said after the attack.
The other attacks, which took place within minutes of each other, targeted the homes of New Democracy MPs S. Anastasiadis and Z. Ioakeimidis, causing material damage.
The fire in their home spread quickly because the perpetrators placed an explosive device under her car.
The investigation has been taken over by the Counter-Terrorism Service because of the scale of the incident, with three simultaneous attacks, while so far there has been no claim of responsibility.
According to media reports, based on video analysis, authorities have concluded that at least three people were involved, seen with their faces covered approaching the sites of the attacks. Two of them were riding a motorcycle, one of whom got off and placed the gas canisters, while a third person, ahead of them and also on a motorcycle, was likely monitoring the area.
