A fire broke out in the early hours at Sismanogleio Hospital, inside a room on the first floor of the First Internal Medicine Clinic, possibly because one patient was smoking in the room. He was taken in for questioning by the Hellenic Police.

The room was completely burned, but the fire did not spread to other areas and there were no injuries, although three patients were being treated in the room, including the suspect who was taken in.

“I want to congratulate the staff, the doctors, the nurses and the administration, who handled a fire and an incident that could have developed into a huge national tragedy,” Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said.

After the fire, the first floor, with around 35 patients, was evacuated, while 35 patients from the second floor were also removed as a precaution.

He said that although it was reported that a patient suffered cardiac arrest and died, the incident was not connected to the fire. He added that there was no oxygen or other flammable hospital material in that specific area and claimed that “someone set fire to the mattress.”

According to the briefing he received from the authorities, the patient allegedly claimed that he had a strange dream, then realized there was a fire and left in fear.
