The Plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg yesterday adopted a resolution on the impact of Turkey’s 1974 invasion on the women and girls of Cyprus, with 575 votes in favour, 33 against and 43 abstentions. The text originated from the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, with MEP Eleonora Meleti as rapporteur, while all Cypriot MEPs voted in favour.

The resolution condemns Turkey’s military invasion and the ongoing occupation of part of the Republic of Cyprus, describing it as a serious violation of international law and an obstacle to peace, stability and EU-Turkey relations. At the same time, it focuses on the gendered and long-term consequences of the invasion, such as conflict-related sexual violence, sexual exploitation, forced displacement, the separation of families, psychological trauma, stigma, and social and economic repercussions.

The resolution, with E. Meleti as rapporteur, was adopted by a large majority: 575 in favour, 33 against and 43 abstentions.

The European Parliament stresses that Turkey continues to bear responsibility under international law for violations committed during and after 1974. It calls for full reparations for the victims, including compensation, rehabilitation, official recognition and guarantees of non-repetition.

MEPs also call for the resumption of UN-led talks on the reunification of Cyprus, the withdrawal of Turkish troops, and the full participation of women in the peace process. They also call on the Commission to support the documentation of crimes, the safe recording of testimonies, psychosocial support services, and the Committee on Missing Persons.
