The appellate investigator handling the Tempi train crash has received a report from the Fire Service’s Arson Crimes Directorate (DAEE) stating that the second cabin of the freight train showed deformations caused by the collision, but no signs of burning or other fire damage. The same applies to the cabin’s interior. [1], [2]
The investigation was ordered after a report by EODASAAM suggested the possible transport of flammable cargo that could have caused the fireball. The final step is the delivery of analyses from the State General Laboratory in order to conclude the inquiry.
The Fire Service examined evidence from the wreckage of the trains at Koulouri in March 2025, two years after the crash.
A separate study on the same issue by NTUA professor Dimitris Karonis, combined with the expert report of Petros Tsakiridis, professor at NTUA’s Laboratory of Metallurgy, which was submitted to judicial authorities last May, had concluded that the cabin damage was the result of the collision and not an explosion.
According to Kathimerini, appellate investigator Sotiris Bakaimis is expected to declare the inquiry closed within the next two weeks, so that by late September or early October the case will be sent to the prosecutor for review. The case could reach the courtroom in the first months of spring 2026.
