The fires that broke out yesterday in Stamata and Keratea, which completely burnt down houses, are now without active fronts [1], [2], [3]. Even though the winds are not as strong today, firefighting forces, reinforced yesterday with firefighters from Thessaly, Epirus, and Thessaloniki, are still operating, as small reignitions are expected to continue throughout the day.
Meanwhile, fires continue to rage in Agia Marina, Zakynthos, where a forest has burned for the third time since 2007. In Distomo, Boeotia, the fires appear controlled and do not threaten inhabited areas. However, in Chios, the settlement of Metochi was evacuated this morning due to a fire nearby.
In Stamata, a man died of a heart attack while trying to escape the fire front.
Firefighters, at the same time, are trying to control fires in the islands of Kos and Crete (Heraklion) as well as Monemvasia. No houses are being threatened by the fire, so far, according to Greece’s Fire Service.
On Serifos, the fire that broke out on Saturday burned the southwestern side of the island, destroying houses, warehouses, and churches, with the flames reaching the sea. Residents, as reported by Ef. Syn described the fire as “getting out of control” due to the limited presence of just four firefighters and one vehicle on the island, with reinforcements arriving slowly.
