Israel launched airstrikes on Gaza yesterday, killing at least 104 Palestinians, including 35 children.
“Among the targets was the Insan camp, a shelter for cancer patients,” said the director of humanitarian aid and international cooperation at Gaza’s Civil Defense.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the strikes, claiming Hamas had violated the ceasefire agreement after an exchange of fire between Palestinians and the IDF, and after the organization returned parts of a hostage’s body that had already been handed over.
In response, Netanyahu convened an emergency cabinet meeting to determine Israel’s reaction, as far-right members of his government demanded a full resumption of the war.
Hamas has so far handed over the bodies of 15 hostages but says it does not know the whereabouts of another 13, as they are believed to be buried under the rubble in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the bombing prompted Hamas—which denied responsibility for the gunfire—to postpone the planned handover of another hostage’s remains, initially scheduled for Tuesday night.
Before the latest overnight attacks, Gaza’s press office had accused Israel of 80 ceasefire violations since the truce began, resulting in 97 Palestinian deaths and 230 injuries.
Under the ceasefire agreement, which took effect on October 10, Hamas is obligated to return the remains of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In return, Israel agreed to hand over the bodies of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.
