Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, at the Maximos Mansion to discuss the electricity interconnection project between the two countries.
“The new circumstances make the added value of connectivity projects we are already promoting even more significant. These are projects of national importance, but also ones with a broader geopolitical footprint. We are proceeding with the immediate update of the project’s financial and technical parameters so that it may potentially be strengthened by the entry of new major investors,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the joint statements made by the two leaders.
“The ties between Cyprus and Greece are fraternal,” said Mr. Christodoulides. “Our common goal is the effective implementation of projects with both economic benefit and geopolitical significance,” he added.
Greece will assume the presidency of the European Council in the second half of 2027.
On the Cyprus problem, both leaders agreed that the positions of the two countries remain unchanged, with the Greek Prime Minister calling on Turkey to “prove” that it truly wishes to restart negotiations.
“As for the Cyprus problem, our positions are clear and have not changed at all. (…) It is now up to others to show whether they genuinely mean it when they say they want to restart the talks,” Mitsotakis said.
They also discussed topics that will be on the agenda during Cyprus’s presidency of the European Council in the first half of 2026.
