Healthcare workers held yesterday a gathering outside the General Hospital of Nikaia, in the context of the visit of the Minister of Health, A. Georgiadis, for the inaugurations of the new Emergency Department (ED), who arrived at the hospital accompanied by two riot police units (MAT), although police forces were already there.

The healthcare workers had blocked the entrance of the hospital in order to express, as they say, their demands to the minister (understaffing, double shifts, etc.), and the police forces pushed them back and used tear gas.

The healthcare workers denounce, among other things, the reduction of 14 pathology resident positions and the non-operation of 3 operating rooms out of the 10.

Mary Agroyianni, a healthcare worker, spoke to Efimerida ton Syntakton and referred to the problems the hospital is facing. She stresses that nurses work 7 and 8 days in a row, without a day off, that the hospital in the last period floods every time it rains, that 14 pathology resident positions will be reduced, and that 7 out of the 10 operating rooms are operating.

“The pressure in the Emergency Department (ED) is daily and the waits are long, especially on days of general on-call duty,” the healthcare workers stress, and they add that “the employees systematically exceed the limits of their endurance. The reinforcement must be permanent and sufficient.”

According to the official data of the Ministry of Interior, in the period 2021–2025, permanent employees were reduced by 104 (from 1,156 in 2021 to 1,052 in 2025) and contract employees were reduced by 18 (from 719 in 2021 to 701 in 2025).
