Today, the Supreme Court ruled with a majority (6 conservatives to 3 progressives) that former U.S. President Donald Trump is immune from prosecution regarding allegations of attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. This significant decision broadly enhances presidential authority.
The likelihood of the former U.S. president facing a jury trial before the elections is minimal, and the charges against him have been significantly curtailed. If Donald Trump were to win the election, the U.S. Department of Justice could potentially move to dismiss the charges against him.
Trump himself celebrated the outcome on social media, rejoicing over the decision. “A great victory for our Constitution and our democracy,” he wrote in all caps. “I am proud to be an American!”
Trump, who faces four separate criminal cases, was attempting to delay their trial until after the November elections.
President Biden warned that the decision sets a dangerous precedent and calls on voters to prevent Trump from winning a second term. “The only limits will be those self-imposed by the president and only,” he added.
The decision represents a firm stance by most of the court, asserting that presidents should be shielded from the risk that political adversaries might later exploit their actions during official duties to level criminal accusations against them. The three dissenting progressive justices stated that the majority had created a “king” above the law.
