The procedures of culling animals in all infected livestock units in the provinces of Nicosia and Larnaca were completed, in the context of the measures that are being implemented for the containment of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. These actions are part of the overall strategy of dealing with the epizootic and of the protection of public health.
According to the official data, the total number of animals that were culled amounts to 28,516 sheep and goats and 1,910 cattle.
The Ministry of Agriculture announced that the last cullings were carried out in an illegal cattle breeding unit in the area of Livadia, which was identified in the context of the inspections that are ongoing.
The 1st dose has been administered to 98% of the cattle and to 76% of the sheep and goats, while the 2nd dose has covered 37.6% of the cattle and 10.6% of the sheep and goats.
At the same time, it was pointed out that no new cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been recorded in other livestock installations, a fact that creates cautious optimism for the course of the situation.
As regards the vaccination program, the first dose has been administered to 98% of the cattle and to 76% of the sheep and goats, while the second dose has covered 37.6% of the cattle and 10.6% of the sheep and goats, with the efforts continuing intensively.
Meanwhile, earlier in March the European Commission appeared negative to the request of Cyprus for exemption from the mandatory culling of all animals in infected units, insisting on the strict implementation of the relevant regulation, despite the particular conditions that prevail in the country.
