Hezbollah yesterday rejected the agreement signed by the governments of Lebanon and Israel with US mediation, describing it as “unacceptable” and insisting that Israel must withdraw to the positions it held before the war.
In Washington, however, Donald Trump told reporters that he believes progress is being made in Lebanon and that the country deserves peace, adding that “this has been going on for a very long time.”
At the same time, Israel continued its attacks in Lebanon, while Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israel would not withdraw its troops from the country.
The agreement included, among other provisions, the creation of “pilot zones” in Lebanon where the presence of Hezbollah members would be prohibited.
Meanwhile, Iran has made a ceasefire in Lebanon a condition for reaching a peace agreement with the United States. Despite Trump’s statements that an agreement is close, Reuters reports that there are few signs of meaningful diplomatic progress.
The day before yesterday, Iranian and US forces exchanged attacks in the Gulf in one of the most intense episodes of fighting since early April, despite the fact that the ceasefire had suspended large-scale hostilities.
According to authorities, Iranian forces struck Kuwait Airport, killing one person and injuring more than 60 others, while the US military carried out attacks against targets near the Strait of Hormuz.
