A 2025 GSEE survey on Greece’s private sector describes working conditions marked by very heavy workloads, stress, and physical exhaustion, which have become everyday realities for employees. Despite improvements in some labor market indicators, the findings show that job quality remains a major issue.
Among other findings, 35.5% work beyond their contractual hours. Of those, 54.7% say they are paid for this work, 34.5% receive no compensation, and 8.9% are compensated with leave or days off. Women are more likely to remain unpaid, at 41.1%, compared with 29.9% of men.
Among those who are not paid for their extra working time, 38.4% say they work during their free time, while the figure falls to 18% among those who are paid.

At the same time, the first group experiences work-related stress at a rate of 34.3%, limited cooperation in the workplace at 25%, and incidents of verbal or physical violence at 17.6%.
A total of 60.1% of employees report time pressure and heavy workloads, a figure that rises to 86.2% among those working overtime.
The sectors with the highest rates of employee overtime are wholesale and retail trade, at 73%, followed by service-providing businesses at 69.9% and scientific/professional activities at 68.1%.
