Cautious optimism prevails among the competent authorities regarding the containment of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, more than four months after the first case on February 20, 2026, and almost one month after the last confirmed case in Mammari on June 10. In total, the disease was detected in 121 livestock units.
During the meeting of the parliamentary Agriculture Committee, the Director-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Gregoriou, presented the epidemiological picture, the biosecurity measures, the sampling programme and the compensation payments to affected livestock farmers. The total amount committed, based on three decisions by the Council of Ministers, stands at €19,469,298, of which €12,755,619 has already been paid.
The chairman of the Committee, Giannakis Gavriel, warned that the situation in the occupied areas keeps the risk of a resurgence alive.
Completion of the vaccination schedule — first and second doses — has reached 87% in cattle, 67% in sheep and goats, and 41% in pigs. Following the receipt of 500,000 doses of Aftovaxpur on June 7, another 500,000 doses of Aftopor are expected on July 19.
Due to the improved situation, the Ministry’s fifth Decree, issued on July 3, allows targeted animal movements under strict conditions, while maintaining the main bans on grazing and the movement of agricultural equipment. The chairman of the Committee, Giannakis Gavriel, warned that the situation in the occupied areas keeps the risk of a resurgence alive.
