Police teams and a committee from the Athens Medical Association (ISA), accompanied by a prosecutor, visited the private clinic where Giorgos Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest.
The investigation is focusing on the clinic’s operating status, after ISA president Giorgos Patoulis said it was registered as a general medical practice but was not licensed to operate a plasmapheresis machine.
“The file states that it is simply a general medical practice operating in cooperation with others, with nothing indicating that there is a specialised plasmapheresis machine or specifying which team operates it,” he said.
Plasmapheresis, the treatment the singer was due to undergo, is a specialised procedure used to remove harmful substances from the blood.
Patoulis added that “plasmapheresis is not something simple, as everyone seems to think, where you go in, undergo the procedure and leave. It is a specialised extracorporeal treatment that removes substances from blood plasma, which is the liquid part of the blood.”
The two doctors maintain in their statements that the facility was operating legally, that the equipment they used was also legal and that they had all the required licences, according to Kathimerini.
At this stage, no criminal responsibility can be attributed to the doctors. The forensic report is expected to provide more information about the circumstances of the singer’s death and any possible criminal liability.
