Speaking at the Republican convention, Donald Trump pledged to give $5,000 to every adult US citizen if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections, a plan that would cost $1 trillion.
Surrounded by supporters holding signs with the American flag, Trump claimed, without providing evidence, that the first two years of his second term had been “the two most successful years, economically and in every other way, in the history of the presidency.”
He also urged voters to vote as if he himself were on the ballot and sought to stoke fears about the Democrats. “There’s a crazy, little, sick cloud over our country,” Trump said. “We’re going to defeat communism in America.”
Midterm elections are general elections held in the US to determine the composition of Congress halfway through a president’s four-year term.
All this, however, reflects the difficult position Republicans are in according to opinion polls, international media report, with Trump’s approval rating at 38%.
His low approval rating has also led many Republican candidates facing close races in swing states to stay away from the Republican convention altogether.
Despite this, Trump made clear in his speech that he believes he will be the decisive factor in November. He also pointed out that the party controlling the White House traditionally struggles in midterm elections. “We have to change that, because we have something so good going,” he said.
