The 4-episode Netflix series gained 24 million views in just a few days and is currently the number one series in 71 countries worldwide.
Prompted by this series, we examined data on youth violence in both Greece and the United Kingdom to better understand the extent of the issue and its real impact.
Youth violence is increasing at an alarming rate. In fact, there was a sharp rise in the number of minor arrests in 2024, with the number of minors arrested for bodily harm doubling compared to 2023.
Here are the numbers:
2024: 8,978 minor arrests | 2023: 6,150 minor arrests
Minors arrested for causing bodily harm:
2023: 383 minors | 2024: 666 minors
Statistics: Every 24 hours, 1-2 violent incidents involving minor gangs are reported, targeting both minors and adults.
A 2023 study by the Youth Endowment Fund (sample of 7,500 children) in England and Wales reports that 1 in 4 children has either been a victim of violence or committed an act of violence.
Nearly half of the children (47%) have witnessed violent incidents in the past 12 months, and 60% have seen real-world acts of violence on social media.
Some children as young as 11 feel the need to carry a knife for their protection.
