The number of divorces in Cyprus remained above 2,000 in 2024. A total of 2,107 divorces were recorded, compared with 2,134 in 2023, equivalent to nearly six a day and 2.16 per 1,000 people, according to the Statistical Service.
Nicosia recorded the highest number of divorces, with 794, followed by Limassol with 57improve without embellishment5, Larnaca with 397, Paphos with 250 and the government-controlled area of Famagusta with 91. However, these figures alone do not indicate differences in the likelihood of divorce, as they are also influenced by the population of each district.
In Greece, 15,532 divorces were recorded in 2024, up from 15,114 in 2023, equivalent to around 1.5 per 1,000 people, according to ELSTAT.
The average duration of marriages that ended in divorce was 13.2 years. Just 33 divorces were recorded within the first year of marriage, while the largest category involved marriages lasting at least 20 years, with 484 cases. Nearly half of all divorces, 1,047, involved couples with no dependent children. Of the 1,638 dependent children involved in divorces in 2024, the largest age group was children aged 5 to 9.
In Greece, divorces increased by 2.8% in the same year, rising to 15,532 from 15,114 in 2023. Although the total number was much higher due to Greece’s larger population, the comparable rate was around 1.5 divorces per 1,000 people, lower than in Cyprus. Some 66.4% involved marriages lasting at least 10 years. At the same time, marriages in Greece fell by 9.2%, bringing the ratio of divorces to marriages to 42.4 per 100.
