The Bulgarian government withdrew on Tuesday the draft budget for 2026, after a week of massive protests by tens of thousands of citizens, led by Gen Z, in the capital Sofia and other cities.
“The Council of Ministers proposed to the National Assembly to adopt a decision for the withdrawal of the draft state budget for 2026,” the government said in a press release.
According to various media, including the Bulgarian News Agency, the largest protest on Monday (01.12) gathered approximately 50,000 to 100,000 people on the streets of Sofia, while clashes with police also broke out.
These are the largest protests in the country since 2013, when citizens demonstrated over the appointment of media magnate Delyan Peevski as head of the secret services.
The protesters denounced the draft budget for imposing higher taxes and social security contributions on the private sector, while directing more funds to the public sector.
Many demanded the resignation of the government coalition, holding signs with slogans such as “Gen Z is coming,” “Resign,” and “Out with the mafia,” targeting key figures they believe control the government behind the scenes.
All this happens while Bulgaria is preparing to adopt the euro on January 1, with 50% of the population fearing price increases.
