Who are the poets, politicians, workers, mothers, lawyers, philosophers, economists, radio producers, directors, and activists who, despite being exiled, imprisoned, expelled, and obstructed by male-dominated institutions, managed to contribute to the building of Europe and European history? How are their stories and struggles connected? How did they create communities, lead, remove barriers, build bridges, heal collective wounds, and ensure that history would not repeat itself?
Starting with a collection of research-based, biographical texts about 18 women who played a critical but often unseen role in shaping European history from the late 19th century to today, the exhibition Disrupting the Archives explores the gendered dimension of collective memory and the “archive.” Through sound, moving images, objects, photographs, and other printed archival material, it takes us into the realities of these “heroines,” highlights the thread that connects their stories and struggles, and ultimately advocates for equal access for all genders in shaping history. The exhibition is a reflection on our shared history and a call to action, following the example of women who paved the way.
The exhibition will be held from June 3 to 8 at “Pano Spiti” (37 Alexandras Avenue).
