A report by the Associated Press highlights the benefits of fasting during Orthodox Lent for both diet and health. For approximately six weeks before Easter, millions of Orthodox Christians adopt a predominantly plant-based diet, avoiding meat, dairy, and eggs, while seafood is permitted.

Unlike other Christian traditions, where believers choose what to give up (such as sweets or alcohol), Orthodox fasting is based on more specific and extensive dietary restrictions.

Monks who strictly observe the fast emphasize that a balanced yet disciplined diet can enhance self-control and concentration. As they note, the feeling of hunger is not something to be avoided but is part of the process, contributing to greater clarity and inner balance.

Even multinational companies such as McDonald’s introduce seasonal menu items that comply with most of the fasting rules of the Greek Orthodox Church.

At the same time, nutrition experts confirm the benefits of fasting, stressing that increased consumption of dietary fiber (from vegetables and legumes) is linked to improved digestive function and a potential reduction in the risk of heart disease and diabetes, provided the diet remains balanced.

However, fasting is not suitable for everyone. Nutritionists point out that it should be avoided or adapted for vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individuals with health conditions or increased nutritional needs. They also warn that overeating after the end of the fasting period can place strain on the body.
