Last night at 22:10, a 39-year-old man fatally injured his 28-year-old ex-partner outside a police department where the woman had gone with a friend to report her ex-partner’s behavior.
The woman had sued her partner for assault and rape in 2020. Since then, he had been placed on a restraining order. According to a statement from the EL.AS headquarters, the 28-year-old “stated that her ex-partner was seen outside her home on the day prior to the attack as well as on the day of.”
Based on the most recent research on femicides in Greece, there was a 4.3% increase in 2022 compared to 2021, while in 2021, the increase reached 200% compared to 2020.
After filing the complaint, the 28-year-old requested police assistance to accompany her home as she was scared of her ex-partner. According to the Athens News Agency and the publication “K,” the duty officer stated that there is a protocol for the police to accommodate the request, and the victim allegedly said she’d make the necessary arrangements herself.
On her way out of the department, and while following the directions she was just given to be accompanied home by the police, her ex-partner attacked and fatally stabbed her. The 39-year-old then stabbed himself in the neck and has since been taken to a hospital, where he is being treated under guard.
A Sworn Administrative Examination has been ordered for the incident to establish whether police officers should be held responsible, while the Attica Security Directorate is conducting a preliminary investigation.
