For the eighth consecutive year, Finland is ranked as the happiest country in the world, according to this year’s World Happiness Report, published today. Denmark and Iceland round out the top three.
European countries dominate the top ten (7/10) and the top twenty (14/20), with exceptions being Costa Rica (6), Israel (8), Mexico (10), Australia (11), New Zealand (12), and Canada (18).
Greece dropped 17 places in the rankings, now at 81/147, down from 64/143 last year. European countries ranked lower than Greece include Bulgaria (85), North Macedonia (86), Albania (89), Georgia (91), and Ukraine (111).
The three lowest-ranked countries are Lebanon (145), Sierra Leone (146), and Afghanistan (147).
The rankings are based on citizens’ own evaluations of their lives. In addition to health and wealth, factors influencing happiness include not eating alone, living with others, and having a social support network, according to the report’s researchers.
It’s also worth noting that 19% of young adults worldwide reported in 2023 that they have no one to rely on for social support, a 39% increase from 2006.
