Less than a week has passed since the first round of the French parliamentary elections, during which dozens of politically motivated physical attacks occurred. After the first round of elections in France, at least three political figures were targeted: a Republican candidate, a National Rally candidate, and a government spokesperson.

Government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot said she and her team were attacked Wednesday night while putting up posters in Menton, near Paris. Simultaneously, a candidate from the Republicans stated on social media that he was assaulted while distributing campaign leaflets in Héricourt on Tuesday. At the same time, a candidate from Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in Savoie also reported being attacked by a shopkeeper on Wednesday.

According to the Minister of Interior, there have been 51 physical attacks against candidates and political activists in France over the past week.

During the same period, over 200 candidates from the left-wing New Popular Front coalition and President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance, who had placed third, withdrew from the second round of elections to unify the “anti-far-right vote” behind a single candidate against the far-right.

The French Minister of Interior also announced yesterday that 30,000 police officers, 5,000 of whom will be in Paris, will be on duty on Sunday, the day of the second round of elections, to prevent incidents following the outcome.
