The UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) disclosed that nearly 360,000 individuals have departed from Rafah since Israel issued the initial evacuation order a week ago on 06.05. This morning, residents of Rafah reportedly received new evacuation directives through phone calls and text messages, as witnesses informed the French News Agency (AFP).
Israel is directing evacuees from Rafah and northern Gaza to a newly designated “humanitarian zone” in Al-Mawasi. However, media reports [1], [2] indicate that this area is neither safe nor equipped with adequate infrastructure to accommodate them. Al-Mawasi is overcrowded and lacks sufficient water, food, healthcare, and sanitation facilities.
Additionally, the UN passed a resolution with 143 votes in favor, including Greece’s, to extend Palestine’s “rights and privileges” within the organization.
UNWRA emphasized in a post on X, ‘There is nowhere for them to go. There is no safe place without a ceasefire.’ Additionally, European Commission Vice President Josep Borrell condemned the forced evacuation of citizens to unsafe zones as unacceptable.
Meanwhile, renewed clashes are erupting in northern Gaza. Israel deployed soldiers and tanks in the morning and conducted airstrikes on targets overnight. Specifically, the IDF announced that forces were engaged in operations in the Jabaliya camp and Zeitoun, east of Gaza City, and the northern regions of Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiyya.
