Those called up with the 2026 C enlistment intake, from late August to early September 2026, are eligible for a nine-month military service term if they do not defer for studies, under the new conscription framework introduced by Law 5265/2026.
The measure is being applied for the first time and covers those born between 1 January and 15 May 2008.
Article 246 of Law 5265/2026 was introduced as an incentive to complete military service at a younger age. It allows full-service conscripts to be discharged after nine months of active service if they enlist when first called up with their age group and complete their service without taking a deferment.
ESSO (Conscript Training Intake) is the intake group through which a conscript enters military service. There are four intakes each year.
At the same time, the new framework also introduces changes for those who want to continue their studies. Those called up with the 2026 C enlistment intake who plan to attend a higher education institution can apply for a deferment as prospective students.
Under Article 188 of Law 5265/2026, applicants no longer need to be already enrolled. Instead, they can submit documents showing that they are eligible to take part in the relevant admission or enrolment process.
