The perpetrator of Garifallia Psarrakou’s femicide in Folegandros was unanimously found guilty of premeditated murder in a calm state of mind by the Mixed Jury Court of the Aegean.
The court rejected the defense’s claims of a sudden impulse and diminished responsibility due to psychiatric episodes and did not grant mitigating circumstances for his clean criminal record or good behavior during detention.
A key distinction between murder “in the heat of passion” and “premeditated” is that the first is punishable with a fixed-term prison sentence, while the second carries a life sentence.
The perpetrator and her partner killed her on July 17, 2021, initially attributing it to a “moment of anger” and claiming the cause was the wrong directions she allegedly gave him to reach the beach. In his defense, he claimed memory gaps and psychiatric episodes, attempted to retract his initial confession, and even cited Paulo Coelho.
To support his claims of psychiatric episodes, he said that during those days in Folegandros, they were being watched by a drone and that he “was boiling inside.” However, from that point on, he claimed he could not recall what happened leading up to Garifallia’s murder.
