A letter from workers to the management of the Syndesmos Traffic and Transport Systems (STASY) highlights the safety issues facing the Hellenic Company of Electric Railways (HSAP) (Line 1), according to “News247.” The workers note that these issues are similar to those in the National Organization for the Investigation of Railway Accidents and Incidents (EODASAAM) report on the Tempi incident and stress that a similar event must not be allowed to happen in the capital.

The letter states that if no action is taken, a “serious accident” is likely to occur.

They also mention problems with signaling (1 incident) and braking system issues (10 incidents), as well as staff shortages and worker fatigue.

The report from the National Organization for the Investigation of Railway Accidents and Incidents (EODASAAM) analyzes the causes that led to the Tempi accident and explains what changes need to be made to prevent a similar incident in the future.

They also report delays in train maintenance and outdated infrastructure, describing the network as being in a state of neglect. According to them, this is primarily due to chronic underfunding, as well as procedural barriers that delay or even cancel critical interventions.

A serious incident recorded in their report took place at Heraklion station and involved the simultaneous operation of two signaling systems (INDUSI and ATP), with the first signaling for the train to remain stopped and the second signaling for it to start moving.

“This situation is extremely dangerous, as one system orders a stop and the other orders movement. We have repeatedly stated that the ‘simultaneous’ operation of two signaling systems can lead to an accident due to contradictory signals,” they explain.
