Today, Supreme Court Prosecutor G. Adelinis issued an order to the head of the Athens Court of Appeal to explore the option of appealing against the section of the Mati decision that acquitted 15 defendants yesterday.
Furthermore, the directive also pertains to investigating the possibility of an appeal regarding the segment of the decision concerning the six convicted individuals. Specifically, it focuses on the recognition of mitigating factors, the sentences imposed on them, and how they were executed.
The five individuals, among them the person whose yard the fire originated from, were found guilty, while the Civil Protection officials and local authorities were acquitted.
The five convicted individuals (including four high-ranking officials of the Fire Department and one of the Hellenic Police) were sentenced to 5 years in prison, the maximum penalty prescribed by law for misdemeanors. According to reports, the court could have suspended this sentence under certain conditions. However, it was instead converted into a monetary fine, sparking outrage among the victims’ relatives, the injured, and public opinion.
The sentence for the five individuals amounts to €38,000 each, while the man responsible for setting the fire due to criminal negligence received a three-year prison term. All of them were subsequently released.
