Israel launched an airstrike in Doha on Tuesday, targeting senior Hamas officials who had gathered to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal.
The unprecedented strike on Qatari territory, a close U.S. ally that hosts Washington’s largest military base in the Middle East, killed six people, including lower-ranking members of the Palestinian group.
Washington reacted with unusually sharp language. President Donald Trump said he had not been informed in advance and publicly voiced his displeasure, though he added that any action aimed at “eliminating Hamas” was “commendable.”
Qatar, which has been mediating between Israel and Hamas in ceasefire talks, denied being warned of the attack by the U.S.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the bombing was in retaliation for Monday’s attack in East Jerusalem, which killed six people and for which Hamas claimed responsibility.
Qatar’s prime minister stated that his country would continue its role as mediator in the conflict but stressed that “today we have reached a turning point. There must be a regional response,” holding Netanyahu personally responsible for the strike.
The UN Security Council has called an emergency meeting to discuss the Israeli attack on Qatar, scheduled for 22:00 Athens time today.
