Tensions remain high in southern Lebanon, even though Iran and Israel have announced that, for now, they are halting direct strikes against each other. One day after Tehran said it was stopping its attacks on Israel, while warning of a “harsh” response if Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon continue, the Israeli army issued an urgent evacuation order for Tyre.
The warning covers a large part of the city and, for the first time in the conflict, also includes a Christian neighbourhood of Tyre. Residents were told to move north of the Zahrani River, while Lebanese authorities said civil defence teams were helping with the evacuation and that shelters for displaced people were full.
Donald Trump said there is “progress” in talks on a deal with Iran, but he has made similar statements 37 times since March.
According to Lebanese state media, Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least three people today, while on Monday Lebanon’s Health Ministry had reported at least 14 deaths from Israeli attacks in the area. Strikes or shelling were also reported in areas including Nabatieh, Kfar Sir, Srifa and Haris, although the IDF has not confirmed all the incidents.
Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would not attack Iran “for the time being”, after the first exchange of fire between Israel and Iran since the April ceasefire, which lasted around 15 hours. However, he stressed that the confrontation with Iran and Hezbollah “is not over”.
At the same time, Donald Trump is seeking a deal with Iran over its nuclear programme and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Although he has spoken of progress, US media note that since March he has predicted at least 37 times that a deal is close.
