Duane Keith Davis, known as “Keefe D,” has been found guilty of the murder of Tupac Shakur, nearly three decades after the rapper was fatally shot in Las Vegas in 1996.
Jurors took about three hours to reach a verdict. Davis was not accused of pulling the trigger, but of organising and instigating the attack in retaliation for the beating of his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, by Tupac and members of his entourage at the MGM Grand a few hours earlier.
Davis has said he was in the Cadillac from which an unidentified person opened fire on Tupac in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996.
On the night of September 7, 1996, Tupac was riding in a BMW with Suge Knight when a white Cadillac pulled up alongside them at a traffic light and an unidentified person opened fire. Shakur was shot four times and died six days later at the age of 25.
Davis’s own public statements played a key role in the case. In interviews and in his memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” he admitted that he was in the Cadillac, that he had obtained a gun and that the attack was carried out in retaliation for the beating of Anderson. The defence argued that these accounts were exaggerated or fabricated for publicity and financial gain.
Davis is due to be sentenced on October 13 and is expected to receive a sentence ranging from 20 years to life in prison. He has said he will appeal.
