Four police officers involved in the handling of Kyriaki Griva’s case are to stand trial. Griva was murdered by her former partner outside the Agioi Anargyroi police station in 2024.
Under a ruling by the Athens Judicial Council, the four defendants, the officer on duty at the time, the supervisor and the guard at the Agioi Anargyroi police station, as well as the emergency police call operator, will stand trial before a Mixed Jury Court on the felony charge of fatal exposure through omission.
The ruling identifies different failures by each defendant, based on the specific legal duties they had because of their positions. In particular, the officer on duty allegedly failed to arrange for Griva to be taken home in a patrol car and to alert the emergency police service to locate her former partner. The supervisor is accused of failing to adequately assess the risk and allowing the 28-year-old to leave without effective protection.
Griva’s killer was convicted at first instance of intentional homicide committed in a calm state of mind and sentenced to life imprisonment plus an additional five years.
The guard is accused of failing to remain sufficiently alert to notice the attacker approaching in time, while the call operator is accused of failing to classify the incident as an urgent domestic violence case and refer it as a high-priority matter.
The court will now have to determine whether these failures were causally linked to Griva being left without protection and murdered just metres from the police station. Her former partner has already been convicted at first instance of intentional homicide committed in a calm state of mind and sentenced to life imprisonment, plus an additional five years for other offences.
