The bloody incident that took place last Saturday in Larnaca, on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue, brought back to the forefront reports of the activity of rival factions that are allegedly clashing over control of illegal “protection” of businesses. During a wild brawl with axes, sticks, and crowbars, shots were fired in a crowded area, putting citizens at risk.
According to what is reported, business owners in the city and in tourist areas have been in turmoil for some time, as threats and pressure are reported for changing the individuals who provide “protection.”
After the incident and the public appeal by the Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, even for anonymous reports, the flow of information to the authorities increased, with part of it being investigated.
The suspects are facing a series of serious offenses, including extortion, participation in a criminal organization, and illegal possession of a weapon.
The Larnaca CID is said to have at least two named complaints about a group with an alleged leader aged 48, who is hospitalized under guard.
One concerns a demand for money for protection from a business owner involved in the incident, while the second relates to the beating of a European citizen in Pyla. At the same time, there is a complaint about a group that approached businesses in Oroklini asking for money.
Last night, five of the eight wanted foreign nationals for the incident were arrested, while three are still being sought. The suspects are facing a series of serious offenses, including extortion, participation in a criminal organization, and illegal possession of a weapon.
